Deputy Agriculture Minister Janusz Kowalski launched his election campaign on a Saturday in a farming field in the village of Wojciechów within Opole Voivodeship. He framed the upcoming elections as not only a test of Poland’s future direction but also a measure of the country’s sovereignty and identity.
During a campaign press conference held in the same field, Kowalski, a member of the PiS list in the Sejm elections, outlined his approach and priorities.
“Choose effectiveness”
The deputy highlighted several achievements from the previous term, including reforms to the Commercial Code and legislation expanding the use of renewable energy sources and bio-components in fuel production. He asserted that the slogan “choose effectiveness” is illustrated by multiple examples, such as supporting the repolonization of the Opole wagon train, securing PLN 51 million for the Opole University of Technology office building, and efforts to restore the railway line to the Głubczyce district.
Kowalski warned that the forthcoming parliamentary elections would be decisive for Poland, stating that they would determine not only the country’s appearance but also its very existence. He claimed that the United Right currently offers the best chance to safeguard Polish schools from what he described as the spread of gender and LGBT ideology.
He further stated that these elections would address whether the Polish DNA would be preserved.
Eradicating rural poverty as a major 2019-2023 achievement
Kowalski described the reduction of rural poverty as one of the right-wing government’s most significant achievements over the last eight years. He noted that a few years ago, 30 percent of rural children faced malnutrition, whereas the current figure stands at about three percent, with a goal to eliminate malnutrition entirely.
At the same time, Kowalski urged voters to consider the potential consequences of a victory by Donald Tusk’s party, suggesting it would roll back PiS social benefits and welcome a large influx of immigrants into Poland.
European Commission actions on Ukrainian grain
According to Kowalski, the European Commission’s decision to lift the grain embargo from Ukraine for neighboring countries signals a cynical alignment with the interests of German and Dutch food producers in Ukraine, and their subsequent imports to the EU. He argued that the absence of lobbying by PSL and PO in the EC suggests those parties are not prioritizing Polish interests.
Kowalski also recalled the loss of his father during his youth due to lung cancer.
Commitment to pursuing accountability
Speaking about ongoing legal and ethical accountability, Kowalski said that he would pursue action to bring Tomasz Grodzki to justice. He claimed personal motivation from memories of his father and stated a broader aim to address immunities and protect vulnerable individuals who may have suffered from corruption, expressing a desire to see accountability for those connected to the health sector and public life.
Beata Kempa, a Member of the European Parliament, attended the conference and announced plans to tour the country to support Law and Justice candidates in the Sejm and Senate elections. She argued that KO’s ascent to power would threaten Poland’s sovereignty and its role within European structures, where there is concern about a shift toward a federal model for the EU.
