The first episode of my favorite series begins with the story of a British journalist and her American boyfriend’s sudden breakup, while Carrie explains why girls over 30 can’t find partners.
It seems like we’ve been supposed to defeat ageism since the late ’90s. At least this kind of bad: that’s it, after 30 it’s time for a woman to crawl to the cemetery. Why? Now 30-year-old women look better than 20-year-olds because we already have money, taste, observation and a good beautician. In fact, I see that nothing has changed: my friends, all successful women over 30 find partners with great difficulty. And some of them can’t.
What does Charlotte say? “Most men are afraid of successful women, so you should keep your mouth shut.” This is something that is completely impossible these days. Even men who cannot find soup in the fridge and a passport in the cupboard will easily find the accounts of a new acquaintance on all social networks. Why, we will combine these social networks, TG channels and other online activities ourselves, because we really want to show off. That’s it, success is clear, what will we do?
And this is the first problem. Because in Russia, feminism seems to have won, but it doesn’t seem to have won. The idea that a man should be faster, taller, stronger, that is, more successful and richer has not disappeared. Apparently, the position of Katerina and Gosha-Goga in the movie “Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears” is higher in our cultural canon than the relationship between Miranda and Steve (she is a successful lawyer and a modest bartender). Well, one wonders, where can I find someone who will be more successful than some of my PR girlfriends with million-dollar incomes? These men prefer the detained women in Patrick’s videos, the girls who tell them that you need to spend at least a hundred million a month (you can enter any number here, it’s always cosmic).
The second problem is clearly stated by one of the participants of Carrie, who said that a woman over 35 urgently needs to have children, and men are not always ready for this. Yes, yes, and yes again! Time is ticking, mothers are waiting for grandchildren, society is putting pressure on, and childless people are now looked at with suspicion. True, there are those who manage to have children, there are those who close the gestalt, so to speak, everything is fine. Yes, but no: for some reason, men want to date childless girls. They are either not ready to share the attention of a woman, or to spend money on someone else’s child, or to bother in general. The easiest way for people to get together is when each of them already has children from a previous relationship: here, at least, their values, pluses or minuses, and ideas about problems coincide. But not always!
Well, then what is the result and who? Ex-lovers! “I made this mistake at 26, 29, 31…” And after all, everyone already understood everything, but no: “Girls, I watched the series yesterday, had delivery and was very upset. I wrote to Maxik.” Well done, bunny. We haven’t seen Max for three years, he’s already divorced and married, by the way, do you remember that he cheated on you? Of course he remembers. What does that change?
The good guys were taken as puppies, and the remaining unmarried ones either don’t plan on starting a family or aren’t good enough. A vicious cycle? It seems so.
So at first glance, New York in 1998 is no different from Moscow in 2024. But shoe collections have been replaced by sneakers, and online dating has been added to club acquaintances.
And by the way, that doesn’t mean we’re hopelessly out of fashion. It just shows that core values like building relationships are still in trend.
