On May 5, 1945, the Allies liberated the Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp in Austria, where thousands of Spaniards were horrified by the Nazi extermination.
May 5 is “Day of Respect to the Spaniards who were deported and died in Mauthausen and other camps, and to all victims of Nazism in Spain”.
After the Spanish War, all forms of democratic thought were persecuted.
Those loyal to an established democracy were defamed, tried militarily, insanely accused. aid in military rebellion, imprisoned and shot; fired, expropriated or forced to sell their possessions. Some suffered humiliation in our towns and cities. Others began their sad journeys of exile, many ending up as slaves of Nazi fascist magnates and in concentration camps in Auschwitz, Mauthausen, Gusen, Ravensbrück, Dachau, Buchenwald, Neuengamme, Sachsenhausen, Flossenburg, Natzeweiler and the islands. Anglo-Normans from Jersey.
About 8,000 Spanish republicans were held in the Mauthausen concentration camp and Gusen subcamp, both of which were declared stateless for this reason, having been deprived of their citizenship by the decision of the Francoist government at the end of the Spanish War and forced to leave our country; They were ignored by the government of French Marshal Petain; they suffered countless atrocities, including about 5,300 Spanish men and women killed there and in other Nazi concentration camps.
According to the most recent data verified by AMICAL, there were a total of 656 deportees (10 women, of which only 5 survived) from 234 Valencia municipalities who arrived in Nazi concentration and extermination camps. Out of 656 exiles, 411 were killed, 5 disappeared, 1 escaped, and 239 were eventually released.
196 were expelled from Alicante State: 120 killed, 1 missing and 75 released.
There were 27 exiles from the city of Alicante, of which 18 died in the Nazi extermination camp of Mauthausen-Gusen and others, and only 9 were released alive from that hell by Allied troops on 5 May 1945.
So this month marks the 77th anniversary of this barbarism.
The Europe of Nazism and fascism swallowed them. Francoism deliberately silenced them and hid them from the collective memory of Valencian and Spanish society. There were these natural people who came from our towns and cities, they were treated like monstrosities until despair and death. More than 62 percent of the deportees were killed, the released were unable to return to their homes, many of whom did not even give a sign of life to avoid endangering their families.
On March 8, Alicante City Council received some commemorative Valencian craft tiles named after each exile issued by the Generalitat Valenciana Government, delivered for several years in each region. Barcala ignored them.
Interestingly, other municipalities of the province with PP governments did not have a complex about recognizing their citizens.
We would like to remind our citizens of Alicante, who were victims of barbarism, by the mayor of Alicante, Mr. Barcala, unlike the Socialists, by publishing their names and surnames so that they will not be forgotten. A woman from Alicantinos and Alicante, passionate about people, freedom and democracy.
