Tropical Storm Hilary Strikes Mexico: Toll Rises Across Baja California and Sinaloa

Two days after Tropical Storm Hilary battered parts of Mexico, a Category 1 hurricane left a trail of fatalities as authorities report four confirmed deaths this Monday. The first victim died last Friday in Navolato, a city in Sinaloa, when a truck was swept away by floodwaters. His body was found several kilometers from the incident site. In Mulegé, north of Baja California Sur, a river of floodwater carried a vehicle into the sea, resulting in the deaths of a family of five. Meanwhile, Hilary’s passage through the Baja California border city of Tijuana has claimed two more lives due to persistent rains that continued into Sunday and early Monday. Officials detailed in multiple communiqués that one deceased person was a young woman who became entrapped in her car during an afternoon rainstorm. The other was a man who went fishing in the sea; the current dragged him inland and he perished. His body was recovered on the Playas de Tijuana beach on Saturday morning. EFE reporting confirms the somber toll from the storm’s impact across these coastal and border regions.
