The government that seized power in Mali after the coup announced on Wednesday the suspension of political party activities and any political actions by associations, promising to keep the measure in place until further notice, citing public order concerns as the reason for the decision.

The Minister of Territorial Administration, Abdoulaye Maïga, conveyed the move during a press conference, explaining that the decision was adopted by decree following a cabinet meeting.

In a statement issued after that government session, the suspension was described as grounded in a rising pattern of efforts aimed at destabilizing political parties and their allies, a situation that, according to the official note, continues to intensify.

The note emphasized that this occurs despite the willingness and readiness of authorities to act with the participation of the people.

The official publication adds that, for public order reasons, the decree project approved suspends political party activities and the political activities of associations across the entire national territory until further notice.

The move comes in a country marked by political instability in the Sahel region, where the military junta assumed power after a 2020 coup and has not called elections despite setting transitional timelines that have not been met.

The most recent deadline passed on March 26, ending a 24-month transition period established by the post-coup government in 2022. Since then, the junta has not commented on a possible electoral process.

Beyond political turmoil, Mali faces ongoing terrorist attacks carried out by groups linked to al Qaeda and the Islamic State, alongside widespread poverty that affects nearly half of the population.
