Spain names its Junior Eurovision 2022 representative
Spain has already announced the artist who will carry its flag at the Junior Eurovision Song Contest 2022. Carlos Higes, an 11 year old singer who was a finalist on La voz Kids 2022, was revealed as Spain’s entry by TVE during the broadcast of Masterchef Celebrity. The next edition of the children’s competition organized by the European Broadcasting Union is expected to take place in Yerevan, Armenia, with a possible date around December 11.
The young performer, who is also an actress and model, has been involved with a variety of projects and disciplines. He studies television, singing and piano and has long said that his love for Eurovision began at age four when Jamala won the contest in 2016. He described the moment as surreal, saying he pinched himself to make sure it was real and that he felt as if he were in a bubble.
Carlos Higes is known for a versatile voice with a wide range, excellent intonation, and a distinctive tonal color. This combination gives him a natural and sincere presence on stage that resonates with audiences and judges alike.
Alongside his singing career, Carlos has drawn inspiration from international artists who have shined on the Eurovision stage. He admires performers such as Justin Bieber, Sebastian Yatra, Chanel, and Blas Cantó, Spain’s most recent representative at the European music competition.
Following the selection of the artist to perform in Yerevan, RTVE initiated the process to identify the most fitting song to showcase Carlos Higes at the Junior Eurovision stage before European audiences. RTVE has maintained a substantial catalog of entries, with more than two dozen topics prepared to participate in Armenia. In October, the team planned to record the song and its music video, and then submit the final material to the European Broadcasting Union before the deadline of November 4.
Spain’s selection process for Junior Eurovision 2022
RTVE opened an open call to locate Spain’s representative for this year’s Junior Eurovision Song Contest. In the first phase, aspiring artists aged 9 to 14 were invited to submit two singing videos to demonstrate vocal ability and interpretive skill. The submission period closed, and a panel of RTVE professionals reviewed the entries to identify the most suitable candidates for the next stage.
Those selected moved on to an in-person audition held in Madrid at the end of September. The goal was to narrow the field to a group of finalists who could present themselves to the selection committee in a live setting. The process emphasized both vocal talent and performance presence, aiming to ensure that the chosen artist would shine on an international stage.
RTVE’s objective has been to preserve Spain’s strong track record in the Junior Eurovision contests. In 2021, Levi Díaz represented Spain in Paris and achieved a respectable fifteenth place with 77 points for the song Reír. The program and its performers have consistently sought to maintain this level of performance and visibility on the European scene, reflecting the country’s continued commitment to youth music and cultural exchange.
