New technologies are also helping to boost wine sales for Spaniards abroad. That is the promise behind the Alicante initiative. Intelligence Trading has launched Moondi, a strategic intelligence software designed to support the internationalization of wine. The product emerged after two and a half years of research, during which the company participated in incubation and acceleration programs such as Alicante Open Future.

Leading the project are Ursula Ramirez (CEO), Anna Boss (CTO) and Marina Almonds (CCO). The team is expanding with highly skilled profiles, including data scientists, computer engineers, brand managers and math graduates. The company has also signed a long-term cooperation agreement with one of Spain’s largest wineries, Felix Solis Avantis Group.

Founders describe Moondi as “business intelligence software, not a marketplace,” and it aims to simplify the decision process for companies seeking to enter foreign markets. It suggests markets based on numerous variables and analyzes the probabilities of each winery entering them and how those markets might be promoted.

The system collects information from a wide array of sources, both official and private, applying marketing techniques that leverage big data and machine learning to build predictive models. These models guide the software in recommending which markets could be most advantageous for different wineries, considering factors such as wine type or grape variety, regional demand, and existing competition.

Moreover, the tool learns from its users. By recognizing patterns not easily seen by the naked eye, it delivers insights that can be surprising, according to the company.

University Validation

The models have been validated by the Mathematical Applications Laboratory of the UNAM Institute of Mathematics in Mexico. Support comes from internationally renowned wineries such as Felix Solis Avantis, a group led by Igor Barahona that exports to 115 countries. Felix Solis Ramos, Director of Export and Marketing, commented, “Moondi serves as an excellent instrument for making and researching medium-term market forecasts. The breadth and diversity of information collected from different sources are greatly simplified with this tool, presenting key indicators in a unified way. Through our affiliate network, it proves especially useful in markets with limited access.”

First Alicante Wine Campaign

Funding for the project includes subsidies from IvaceLike Innovateic and Asesora, plus a dedicated funding round of 150,000 euros. This support enabled the team to grow and complete development.

While the project is currently focused in Spain, the wine industry there relies on around a dozen wineries that account for close to 90 percent of total wine exports, according to the company. Intelligence Trade’s main aim is to provide an accessible tool for all wineries seeking to export, beginning with those in Alicante. The software is offered in two versions: Moondi GO, designed for wineries starting export activity by delivering international trade insights across ten key markets, and Moondi PRO, aimed at wineries that already export and want to optimize decisions and boost sales in targeted markets.
