In a Tuesday operation in Bourem, located in the eastern Gao region, Malian troops reported successfully neutralizing 46 alleged terrorists. The clash resulted in the deaths of ten soldiers, with several others wounded, all of whom were evacuated to Gao for medical care. The military described the event as a coordinated effort aimed at preventing attacks on both soldiers and civilians in the area.

According to the Armed Forces General Staff, Malian forces targeted a convoy that appeared to be preparing an assault on troops and nearby civilians during the pre-dawn hours. The army then conducted air and ground operations against multiple terrorist installments across different vehicles and motorbikes. The military statement noted that the attacks also threatened a town along the Bourem corridor and a group of vehicles involved in the assault.

Preliminary figures while the operation was ongoing showed 46 terrorists killed. Three individuals were identified as key organizers of the attacks, and more than 20 vehicles, along with weapons, were destroyed. Ten soldiers were killed and thirteen were wounded in the fighting, with all needing evacuation to Gao for treatment.

The Armed Forces of Mali affirmed their commitment to safeguarding national sovereignty and protecting the lives and property of citizens. The release emphasized a readiness to confront illegal terrorist activity that targets defenseless populations, with a focus on defending the country’s integrity without compromise.

Across the Sahel, including Mali, Chad, Mauritania, Niger, and neighboring regions, security dynamics have increasingly featured jihadist violence linked to groups aligned with both Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State. The regional security picture has also included inter-communal tensions, prompting ongoing and expanded operations by national militaries and regional partnerships to stabilize the area and deter attacks in the long run.
