Background: Discussion arose around the reception of Ada Wong’s voice portrayal in the Resident Evil 4 remake
As many fans know Lily Gao voiced Ada Wong in the remake. Recent coverage highlighted a wave of criticism directed at Gao from some fans. Actor Nick Apostolides, who gives voice to Leon, shared his perspective on the situation.

Apostolides referred to the critics as Twitter trolls, a remark that sparked fierce responses toward Gao on social media. In the aftermath, Gao briefly removed her Instagram presence amid backlash that some observers labeled extreme by certain audiences in Russia.
In several reports, some fans argued that Gao made Ada Wong feel less sexualized than her appearance in the original game. For context, the character was voiced earlier by Jolene Andersen in the initial release.
Apostolides, who also voiced Leon in the remake of Resident Evil 2, offered Gao encouragement and recalled his own experience with online backlash when he first joined the franchise. He reminded Gao that new actors often face strong, divergent opinions from fans who hold beloved characters dear to their hearts.
“When Resident Evil 2 released, opinions came in quickly. Some fans liked the voice, while others preferred previous actors who voiced Leon. Yet there was a mix of negative and positive feedback. I told her not to take it personally. Whenever a fan favorite character is recast, people will have different takes. When people are unhappy, the loudest voices tend to dominate the conversation”. This sentiment came from Nick Apostolides, who reflected on his own experience as a veteran in the franchise.
Apostolides also noted a recurring pattern in online critique, pointing out that women and members of the LGBT community often face harsher scrutiny than white heterosexual male performers when stepping into iconic roles.
Beyond the remake, Lily Gao is recognized for her work on Ada Wong, including a notable appearance in the 2021 series Resident Evil: Raccoon City where she portrayed the same character, a performance that has continued to shape discussions around voice acting choices for this franchise.
