Mercadona president Juan Roig plans to allocate 100 million euros this year, representing a 25% increase in personal assets and dividends distributed by the supermarket group to boost Valencia and the national economy, as well as its social, sports, and patronage initiatives.
Specifically, Roig’s gross salary stands at 11 million euros, with dividends reflecting the company’s performance in Valencia and in 2022, totaling five million euros after taxes, according to company sources reported to Europa Press.
During the results press conference, the Mercadona leader noted that as a resident of the Community of Valencia, he is liable for 54% of this income as personal income tax, to which wealth tax is added.
The remuneration details were also highlighted in the accounts filed with the Trade Registry, as reported by Infoempresa, which stated that Roig’s pay was consistent with his leadership and experience and aligned with compensation for similar positions in comparable companies.
Last year the supermarket group paid 161.12 million euros in dividends.
Hortensia Herrero, the wife of Mercadona’s vice president, who owns 80% of both Roig and Mercadona, acquired some of their assets for patronage in entrepreneurship, education, and sport.
In this way, a significant portion of their dividends and personal assets is reinvested into various ventures through the Legacy Project, which supports entrepreneurship, education, sport, entertainment, arts, and culture.
The Legacy Project began in 2012 with the aim of sharing knowledge and personal heritage to contribute to social development through patronage of entrepreneurship, education, arts, culture, and sport.
Roig has built what is described as the world’s largest ecosystem through Marina de Empresas, a network centered on talent, innovation, leadership, and entrepreneurship across the Mediterranean, with plans to invest five million euros more. The project rests on three pillars: EDEM, a university for business education and a business school; Shuttle, an accelerator that helps startups; and Angels, a fund that invests in entrepreneurial leaders.
The Legacy Project also emphasizes sports patronage through the Trinidad Alfonso Foundation, with seventy million euros, and Licampa 1617, known as Roig Arena, into which twelve million euros will be invested to position the Community of Valencia as a global sports benchmark in the coming years. A total of two hundred twenty million euros is expected to flow into Roig Arena’s development and operations.
In parallel, Roig Basketball has continued to strengthen its footprint with the Valencia Basketball Club, recognized as Europe’s leading professional basketball organization for both men and women. L’Alqueria del Basket, Europe’s largest and most advanced basketball training facility, remains a flagship project within the group’s sports initiatives.
