Mercadona plans to hire a sizable team for the Alicante region, with around 1,000 new workers to cover the summer campaign running from May through September. The aim is to meet holiday demand and bolster service in coastal stores where tourist influx typically increases sales and customer traffic.

In this context, the company, led by Juan Roig, already employs a substantial permanent workforce in the province, totaling 5,782 staff spread across 96 supermarkets. The logistics hub, located in San Isidro, supplies all stores in the area, while the Alicante warehouse acts as the central node for processing and distributing online orders. This facility, referred to as the region’s delivery hub, opened in the previous year.

According to the latest figures, the summer campaign would bring about 287 more workers than the same period last year.

Mercadona reported 31.041 billion euros in turnover for 2022, with record sales driven by inflation and a net profit of 718 million euros

Regarding the summer recruitment, Mercadona’s employment portal lists various offers, with details on the position requirements and a starting gross monthly salary of around 1,507 euros. The chain notes that no prior experience is necessary, as new hires receive targeted training tailored to each role.

Mercadona’s supplier purchases in Alicante

Juan Roig indicated that last year the chain purchased goods from suppliers in Alicante worth 766 million euros, marking an approximate 9% rise from the prior year. This underscores the broader impact of Mercadona’s activity in the province beyond employment numbers.

Key Alicante suppliers include Sanchis Mira (Antiu Xixona), a leading chocolate and nougat producer; Precious Chocolates, continuing a significant collaboration; and Carmencita, a well-known spice brand that remains a strategic partner.

Mercadona also produces a large share of its Hacendado branded ice creams through an Alicante-based group with operations in Saint Vincent, and the region is home to several olive suppliers, including local producers renowned in the market.

Additionally, Mercadona purchases a variety of agricultural products from Alicante, including Agricola Villena and Javaloyes onions, along with cooperatives across the province. The fish section sources seafood from regional auctions.

Billing and social impact

Last year Mercadona closed with a turnover of 31.041 billion euros, a rise of 11% from the previous year, and a net profit of 718 million euros, up 5%. The company created around 3,000 new jobs in Spain and 1,000 in Portugal, bringing its total employee count to about 99,000.

Over the past year, Mercadona has strengthened its social responsibility initiatives in the Valencian Community and across Spain, including food donations totaling 370 tons to social organizations in Alicante. These activities support soup kitchens and charitable entities in the province, such as the Alicante Food Bank Foundation, Alicante Gastronómica Solidaria, Cáritas Interparroquial de Elche, and Alimentos Solidarios de Torrevieja, delivering essential items on a daily basis.
