Megamarket research, reviewed by socialbites.ca, shows a notable surge in demand for hiking and outdoor activity products, rising by 70% from the previous year.

In Russia, the tourist season traditionally kicks off with warmer weather. The peak period for buying camping gear falls in mid-May through early June, when many locals map out their trips. Analysts from Megamarket project that the average value of a travel gear basket in 2024 will reach 24,900 rubles, marking about a 9% increase from 2023.

Market experts define the traveler’s basic kit for 2024 as including a backpack and tent, a sleeping bag, a foam mat, eating utensils, a thermos, a pot, a flashlight, a stove, matches, and insect repellent. They also note that interest in these products has doubled in the spring compared with the same period last year. Data indicate sleeping bags up by 75%, travel furniture by 64%, stoves and heaters by 62%, and travel cooking utensils by 51%.

Over time, the composition of the travel basket has expanded. Analysts observe growing popularity of items aimed at comfort in nature, navigation in rugged terrain, and even metal-detecting devices. In 2024, hammocks ranked among the top buys alongside essentials, with demand up 97% versus the prior year, awnings up 80%, metal detectors up 26%, and compasses up 11%. An emerging trend also highlights active water recreation, with stand-up paddleboard purchases quadrupling compared with last year.

Marketplace experts anticipate broader participation by women in hiking activities in 2024, with increased purchases of trekking poles, footwear, tents, sleeping bags, and awnings. Men are shown to invest more in insect protection products.

The leading hubs for hiking and outdoor gear purchases in spring 2024 include Moscow and its surrounding region, followed by St. Petersburg, the Republic of Tatarstan, Krasnodar Territory, and the Samara region. Regional differences persist: residents of St. Petersburg and Tatarstan tend to buy sleeping bags more frequently than Muscovites, while residents of the capital show a stronger inclination toward tourist lanterns and foam mats. The average spend on camping equipment is about 4,200 rubles in Moscow and roughly 3,800 rubles in St. Petersburg.

Recent trends also point to evolving consumer interests in particular regions, reflecting a mix of practical needs and leisure activities when exploring Russia’s diverse landscapes.
