Staff at a Barcelona postal branch halt operations due to extreme heat and cooling failures
In Barcelona, the Calàbria street postal facility at number 235, the 35th branch to report daily mail activity, suspended work on Wednesday. The decision followed a request from the UGT union representing Correos employees and the occupational risk prevention delegates affiliated with CC.OO. Catalonia, who filed a formal complaint with Labor Inspection over stifling heat in the center. The group described the conditions as dangerous enough to warrant immediate attention and intervention.
UGT Correos stated that internal temperature levels ranged from 32 to 33 degrees Celsius, a level they consider a serious risk to workers who must continue their tasks in such heat. The situation prompted the Catalan CGT to issue a separate statement highlighting problems with air conditioning and overall temperature management inside the branch, urging enforcement of the Occupational Risk Prevention Act to protect staff. They stressed that proper climate control is essential for safe and efficient operations at postal facilities.
The workers are awaiting a formal decision from Labor Inspectorate and the implementation of safety measures to reopen the site. They emphasized adherence to heat prevention guidelines and indicated that any reopening would need to follow all recommended steps to mitigate heat exposure for personnel on site.

According to Correos sources, cited by Europa Press, the center ceased operations as of Wednesday. The company attributed the shutdown to a fault in the air conditioning system and said it is coordinating with the supplier to obtain the required spare parts. In the meantime, portable cooling units are being considered for temporary relief, while a permanent fix is arranged.
Regarding customer service, it was noted that shipments are being handled by a nearby unit with staff guiding customers to the nearest offices that can process shipments. The overall aim remains to minimize disruption for clients while safety measures are put in place to address the heat and equipment issues.
