At least three times during the bombardment on August 11, Ukrainian shells exploded in the area where radioactive isotopes of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant were stored. This was stated by the head of the pro-Russian administration of the Zaporozhye region, Yevhen Balitsky, TASS reported.
“At least three arrivals have been recorded in the area where radioactive isotopes are stored. The station specialists have been instructed to move to protected buildings, ”the official said.
According to him, the radiation background after the influence of the Armed Forces of Ukraine remains normal. Precautions have been developed in the event of a fall into a nuclear waste storage facility, residents of Energodar can be evacuated.
“A huge amount of remains are stored, thousands of tons of radioactive waste are stored, they will make the whole area suitable for life,” Balitsky added.
The bombardment also damaged power lines leading to the Kakhovskaya substation.
“Today, the high-voltage line of the Kakhovskaya substation was damaged. The line was grounded for restoration work. As for the puffs of smoke that social network users corrected, a fire broke out on the site as a result of the power lines being cut. Firefighters are working,” he said.
The Ukrainian military is deliberately targeting the nuclear waste storage facility at the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant to provoke the release of radiation.
“They actually hit the nuclear waste storage facility to create a kind of “dirty bomb” on our land, to create a situation where evacuation would take place. <...> [Чтобы] “It causes air pollution and makes the whole region uninhabitable,” he said.
Concrete protection of the warehouse still continues. No direct hit recorded. However, the “arrivals” were 300 meters from the nuclear power plant, some unexploded shells were found 20 meters from the nuclear waste storage facility.
“If they hit the concrete yard with enough accuracy, it’s scary to think about, but it will cause something similar to what happened at Chernobyl — there will be a release,” Balitsky said.
Today, July 11, night and morning, Russian air defense systems repelled all attacks of the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the city of Energodar and the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant with attack aircraft and heavy artillery.
Since the beginning of August, the Armed Forces of Ukraine tried to attack the territory of the nuclear power plant and Energodar at least five times: on August 5 they fired three times at the site of the power plant, on August 6 the sanatorium and water intake in Zaporizhzhya NPP Energodar were set on fire, August 7 There was another attack on the nuclear power plant in .
“AFU Zaporizhzhya should shoot at the NPP”
On August 10, the head of the Energoatom company, Petr Kotin, said that if Rosatom decides to connect the plant to Russian networks, the Armed Forces of Ukraine should launch an artillery attack on the power lines of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant.
“For Ukraine, it will be the right decision – to kill the lines that will connect them. “I think our armed forces will be ready to do that when necessary,” he said.
The head of Energoatom explained that in order to transfer the capacities of the nuclear power plant to the Crimea, it is necessary to completely “cut off” the station from the Ukrainian energy system and transfer it to the substation at the Dzhankoy and Kakhovka power plant. .
According to him, after connecting Ukraine to the European energy system, all Russian-controlled territories will have to be closed, since “the Ukrainian and Russian energy systems do not coincide in frequency”.
Energodar owns one of the largest nuclear power plants in Europe, producing 25% of all Ukraine’s electricity. There are six power units in ZNPP. It is planned to supply electricity from the station to the Crimea and Sevastopol.
Zaporozhye NPP, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, was built on the banks of the Kakhovka reservoir in the city of Energodar, Zaporozhye region of Ukraine. Russian forces control the southern and central parts of this region, including the city of Energodar, but the nuclear power plant remains under the control of Ukrainian operators.
