Scientists from the Canadian business school HEC in Montreal (Canada) and Duke University in the USA found that a chocolate gift raises the mood more effectively than a secret conversation. reports Daily Mail.
The study involved 3,600 people. In one experiment, participants were asked to imagine their own car had crashed into another car and asked a friend for help. Those who heard that a friend was speechless but would send a chocolate gift later felt better than those who were told that their friend would call back.
In the second couple experiment, one partner asked for emotional support, while the other responded with a sweet gift or a short conversation. Those who received chocolate felt better about themselves and found their partner’s actions more meaningful. Lead researcher Holly Howe noted that people expect a mutually beneficial exchange during conversations, but when receiving a gift, they perceive the giver’s sincere, altruistic intentions. She also said that the cost of the gift is not as important as its symbolism and attention to the recipient.
