American company Intel will be able to receive $3.5 billion in government grants for chip production under a secret Pentagon program, Bloomberg reports, citing sources.
The agency said the grant opportunity opened up for Intel after the semiconductor maker “reached a binding agreement with U.S. authorities.”
According to him, a secret program called Secure Enclave involves the production of cutting-edge chips for the Pentagon’s military and intelligence needs. The article states that the program will be implemented at Intel facilities in several states, including Arizona, where the company’s major subsidiary is located.
The material suggests that Intel plans to freeze projects outside the United States to focus on American projects.
On April 22, the head of the US Department of Commerce, Gina Raimondo, said that the most advanced chips needed for the American military-industrial complex are produced abroad. The secretary explained that 90 percent of them are made in Taiwan, but that the Pentagon’s weapons are “the key to the future.” Washington’s chip supplies could be lost if the island is reunited with mainland China.
