Bariatric surgery to reduce stomach volume may reduce the risk of heart failure. A study published in the journal Heart Disease showed that this occurs because of increased blood flow to the heart muscle. JACC: Cardiovascular Imaging.
People living with obesity have a higher risk of heart failure, which is thought to be partly due to reduced blood flow in the heart’s small vessels.
In the new study, researchers analyzed data from 27 patients six months after bariatric surgery. They showed that the patients who underwent the surgery had improved blood flow in the heart’s small blood vessels. The information was obtained using a special type of MRI that measures blood flow in the smallest vessels of the heart muscle.
“Previous studies have shown that weight-loss surgery in obesity can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and related death. Our study provides additional insight into the benefits of this intervention,” the authors said.
Six months after surgery, patients had lost an average of 29 pounds, and 13 of 17 patients with type 2 diabetes had improved from their preoperative condition. They also had less fat around the liver, lower blood pressure and lower levels of “bad” cholesterol. All of these are associated with reduced cardiovascular risk.
