Residents of the city of Kemerovo reported that one of the reasons for the tram accident was the closure of one of the two checkpoints on the Tom River. They told this to a socialbites.ca correspondent.
The fact is that the river divides the city into two parts, which are connected only by two bridges. On May 25, one of them was closed for repairs. As a result, the traffic load on the remaining crossing increased exponentially.
“The bridges are clogged, it is impossible to cross, so the trams are overloaded, the cars work hard,” said a Kemerovo resident, noting that many residents prefer to travel by tram to avoid heavy traffic jams.
The highway leading to the bridge is on a sloping terrain. In this section, the brakes of the transport vehicle failed and due to the downhill movement, the tram reached high speed and caught up with the vehicle in front.
In addition, according to the statements of local residents, the accident occurred during rush hour (07.30 local time) in the lane leading from the residential area to the city center. Kemerovo residents also noted that due to overcrowding in the cabin, the doors flew off at a bend, followed by several passengers.
Residents believe that local authorities should initially provide an additional crossing over Tom and only then close the Kuzbass Bridge or carry out repairs in stages. They especially remember the ring road project, which involved the opening of another bridge around Kemerovo.
Last October, Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed To ensure that the construction of the highway surrounding Kemerovo is completed by the end of 2024.
Previously at KETK celebrated courage The driver of the tram that crashed.
