DNA analysis showed that the mummies from the Tarim Basin were native to ancient China. This was reported by Arkeonews.
In 1990, hundreds of mummified bodies were found on boats in the desert of northwestern China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. Despite their age of four thousand years, they are incredibly preserved: facial features and hair colors are visible.
It was assumed that these people did not live in Xinjiang: They were tall, wore wool felt hats and leather boots, and some had blond hair. However, DNA analysis of 13 mummies conducted in 2021 showed that they were local residents who had lived in the area for a long time.
They appear to be the ancestors of the indigenous people living in Siberia and America today. The discovery disproved hypotheses that the mummies were shepherds from Russia’s southern Black Sea region, people from Central Asia or early farmers on the Iranian plateau.
Although previous research has shown that these people lived on the edge of a desert oasis, it is still unclear why they were found in boats covered with cowhide, with oars on their heads. This practice is found nowhere else in the region and is primarily associated with the Vikings.
