Researchers at New York University have found that one week of time-restricted eating can lower blood sugar levels and potentially prevent the progression of type 2 diabetes. The research is presented at ENDO 2023, the endocrine society’s annual meeting in Chicago.
Time-Limited Early Feeding (eTRF) involves a person eating most of their calories within the first six to eight hours after waking up. In the new study, the scientists divided 10 participants into two groups: the first consumed 50% of their daily calories before 4 pm, and the second consumed 80% of the calories before 1 pm. Seven days later, the groups switched places.
Participant weights remained constant throughout the study. The scientists found that eating most of the calories earlier in the day reduced the time it took for blood sugar levels to rise, thereby improving the metabolic health of the participants.
These data suggest that eTRF can improve blood sugar control within one week, regardless of weight. However, more research is needed to understand the true benefits of such a diet.
