Lithuania officially withdraws its ambassador from Russia
Lithuanian authorities have officially withdrawn the country’s ambassador to Russia, Eitvydas Bajarunas, and are planning to close its consulate general in Saint Petersburg amid tensions with the Eurasian country resulting from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
According to a draft resolution submitted by the Lithuanian Government this Thursday, Bajarunas will leave his post on 1 June, while the consulate general in Saint Petersburg will close on the 7th of the same month, according to the Lithuanian newspaper ‘Kauno Diena’.
Lithuania later expelled Russia’s ambassador to Vilnius, Alexei Isakov, and several employees of the Russian consulate in Klaipeda, for alleged atrocities committed by the Russian Army on Ukrainian soil. Russia then ordered the closure of Lithuanian consulates due to “hostile” measures.
