VG247’s quirky awards annual roundup highlights a mix of playful categories and pointed jabs at the industry
The VG247 portal conducted its own unconventional awards ceremony, selecting winners in nontraditional categories rather than naming the year’s best game. Rather than crowning a single champion, the event spotlighted curiosities, quirks, and unique trends across the gaming landscape, with Gotham Knights earning the tongue-in-cheek title of the most mediocre project among the nominees.
Here is a snapshot of the annual VG247 results:
- Best Advertising – Hellene Taylor and Bayonetta 3;
- Most misunderstood game – To Leave;
- Most Devoted Fan – Elden Ring News (daily posts about the game prior to release, including updates and notable absences);
- The best editor for making freaks – Street Fighter 6;
- The worst trend is NFTs and the metaverses;
- Most Impressive Game Line – Square Enix for titles including Crisis Core, Chrono Cross, The Centennial Case, Stranger of Paradise, Live A Live, Valkyrie Elysium, Triangle Strategy, Diofield Chronicle and Tactics Ogre;
- “Is it over yet?” Award – Square Enix for releases such as Star Ocean: The Divine Power and Valkyrie Elysium, which drew little discussion despite their presence;
- Best Sports Game – Goat Simulator 3;
- The most mediocre game – Gotham Knights;
- Best Puzzle Design – PS5 Operating System;
- The best excuse for not being inclusive is Final Fantasy XVI;
- The best game that’s a little bad – Sonic Limits;
- The saddest death of the year: the idea of boycotting microtransactions in Diablo Immortal.
Earlier, The New Yorker magazine named the best games of 2022, with Cyberpunk 2077 unexpectedly making the list. More recently, the People’s Choice Awards ceremony honored standout films and series. In related news, a collector’s edition was announced for Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2.
