Where to find and how to get eggs
The most important step is to install the Mistland update. If this has not been done yet, a separate guide covers the process.
Breeding chickens requires Eggs, a resource that cannot be obtained in the open world. Eggs can be purchased from the merchant Haldor, who can appear anywhere on the map. He is usually found on starting or nearby islands, often close to the water. Haldor remains restricted to the black Forest biome, so players should not search for him in other biomes. If locating this merchant proves difficult, a dedicated guide can help.
You can begin raising chickens only after defeating the boss Yagluth. This boss marks the fifth story arc and deals significant damage compared to other enemies. The surrounding guide explains how to defeat it.
You will return to the merchant after meeting the requirement. The Haldor inventory now includes eggs for 1500 gold each.
To breed chickens, players must purchase at least two eggs. This means accumulating a minimum of 3000 coins before starting the process.
How to collect coins fast
Valheim offers several ways to earn coins. A detailed set of methods has been described previously.
- Search abandoned buildings and gnome settlements, open chests, and collect coins
- Explore dungeons to uncover coins and gems in burial chambers
- Gather gems and trade them with the merchant
- Defeat the third floor boss Mass of Bones to obtain a brace that helps locate buried treasure and sell it to Haldor
Console commands
For players who want to skip the grind, console commands provide a faster route. The console must first be activated in the game settings.
- Open the Steam Library, locate Valheim, and select Properties
- Navigate to General and choose Start Parameters, then input -to console
Once in game, press F5 to open the console. Enable cheat mode by entering develop commands. The command to add coins should specify the exact amount needed, with attention to not causing instability. A cautious approach suggests adding 200-300 coins at a time.
How to raise chickens
With two eggs on hand, return to the camp and set up a small paddock. A spare room can be used as a chicken coop if needed.
Dropping an egg on the floor does nothing unless it is kept warm under a shelter. Place a regular fire nearby and build a roof. Hovering over an egg shows its status:
- Cold — the egg is not warm enough. A nearby bonfire helps improve warmth
- Hot — the egg is warm and the chick will hatch soon
When all conditions are met, hatching occurs after about one and a half in-game days. Keeping the fire lit is essential; otherwise, the process repeats.
Some chickens to feed
Chicks do not require food, but adult chickens need regular meals. Seeds are suitable for feeding.
When the birds have enough food, a marker indicates happiness. If food runs low, a warning appears instead. Timely feeding prevents any bird from starving over time.
What resources can be obtained
Chickens produce three resources: eggs, chicken meat, and feathers. Domesticated chickens can be slaughtered with a butcher knife, while tamed animals cannot be killed with other weapons. The knife requires tin bars and wood to craft, along with basic materials.
- Wood
- Can (metal can)
Feathers are useful for arrows, while chicken meat and eggs enable cooking. The following dishes are commonly prepared from these ingredients.
