Starfield is a highly anticipated project from Bethesda Game Studios where players assume the role of a space explorer. They visit hundreds of planets and settlements, tackling a wide array of missions and tests. This guide offers a thorough overview of Starfield story missions and practical tips to help players progress with confidence.

One small step
After the initial cutscene, players team up with Supervisor Lin and help him break free from the confinement. Mining minerals in a nearby adit is done by approaching the resource stores, holding the attack button, and lining up the beam. This triggers a sequence that leads to new opportunities and dialogue choices for character customization.
When the bulldozer clears the way to the deeper mines, listening to companions becomes an option. If pressed for time, players can head straight for the artifact, loosen it with the knife, and trigger a cutscene that allows character appearance and attribute adjustments before continuing.
At the station, Lin guides the player to equip a helmet by opening the inventory and selecting a suitable piece of gear.
Wait for the ship to land on the pad, then listen for Barret. Pirates will attack the station shortly after the dialogue—retrieve the first weapon from a yellow box, confront the enemies, and resume the conversation with the friend.
Climb aboard, take the helm, and begin a brief spaceflight training that covers balancing power systems and targeting enemy ships.
After repelling the attackers, fly a short distance to inspect wreckage by pressing the E key. Gather loot and return to the map (M). Select the planet Kreet and fast travel there, opening the map again to choose a landing zone and pressing X to land.
Kreet Research Laboratory
The path to the lab runs through a corridor filled with corpses and valuables. Following the marker, players encounter pirates who must be defeated. In the long hallway, the first left door opens to a back room containing a safe and a digital keypad. This early game mechanic introduces hacking—read this guide if needed.
Continuing along the marker reveals another safe. Several lock picks line the way, and opening the second safe yields a substantial credit reward.
Emerging onto the surface, the pirate leader appears. Trickery can avoid a fight, but the chosen route here is to engage. After the clash, use the scanner to locate the ship and reach safety. For fast travel mechanics, see the game guide.
Tip: To track a quest target, open the job log (L), hover over the quest name, and press B. The map will open, letting players jump or steer the ship depending on distance.
New Atlanta (New Atlantis)
Upon arrival, the ship is scanned for contraband. If no smuggled goods are found, landing permission is granted. Open the map, select the landing point, and hold X to land.
Move to the transportation node and choose MAST District to reach Constellation HQ, where a conversation with Sarah completes the artifact delivery and advances the mission.
The Old Neighborhood
There, Sarah joins the team. For players who prefer solo travel, she can be asked to temporarily leave the party. Exit the building, open the map, and use MAST District movement to reach Taul at the reception and access the transport hub.
Take the elevator to NAT Station and proceed to Spaceport. From there, set course for a nearby galaxy and set sail for new adventures.
Mars
With Mars nearby, land in the colony and locate the bartender on the lower level. In conversation, uncover information about Moara by choosing from available approaches:
- Pay 2500 credits;
- Persuasion (check);
- Let Sarah speak.
Return to the ship and jump to Venus in the same system.
Landing on Venus is unnecessary; instead, fly near a nearby satellite and activate it by selecting the area and pressing E, then hold R to activate.
The job status updates, and progression continues via the map or by tracing a cursor and choosing Trip.
Dock at the Nova Galactic Staryard. Here, players face multiple enemy encounters. The goal is to reach the center of the complex and retrieve data from Moara.
Ascending stairs, a small room offers a terminal next to the door. Return to the ship, undock, and head to Neptune for the next leg of the journey.
Neptune
In orbit around Neptune, several enemy ships appear. Destroy one, then board the other by approaching closely and holding R to initiate boarding.
On the enemy ship’s bridge, speak with Moara and collect the artifact behind him. Use the map to jump to Alpha Centauri for a gravity-assisted return to Constellation HQ, placing another artifact on the table to complete the quest.
The empty nest
Meet Sam in the next room. Then travel by space to Olympus and from there to Cheyenne to continue the adventure.
Job gone wrong
Reaching the city gates, a guard explains a bank incident that kick-starts a new side mission. The player must complete it to push the story forward. Marshal Daniel Blake offers assistance, and a door device triggers a dialogue with the robbers’ leader.
Players go through a loyalty test. If the first check fails, a retry is possible, and several correct answers may exist. The choices that yielded success included indicating that the hostages should be left unharmed and that the loot has already been recovered.
Entering the bank vault, the player retrieves contents and speaks with Sam, who suggests contacting Jacob for cave coordinates of the next artifact.
Persuasion can be used, with the idea that sooner agreement means earlier departure. The journey continues as the mission unfolds.
Journey to the empty nest
Preparation is key before approaching the indicated area. A large enemy presence, including automated turrets, blocks the mine entrance. The guide recommends disabling turrets with a console on the left side of the mine entrance to conserve ammo.
Inside the cave, expect few enemies and a closed grid. Unlock it by upgrading the Security skill. Quick hacking tips are provided in the accompanying screenshots.
Proceed to the cave’s end, using the cutter to free the artifact. Shaw and his gang appear at the exit. Persuasion, a 4000 credit payment, or defeating them are valid options. If the first option is chosen, the suggested dialogue answers are listed in the guide.
After agreeing with Shaw, monsters attack the camp. Fast travel back to Constellation HQ and place the artifact on the table to conclude the objective.
