- Where to buy and how to steal a ship in Starfield – guide
Starfield brings a vast array of starships into play as players chart their way through its expansive universe. A ship is essential for anyone aiming to become a spacewarden. This guide explains how to acquire the first ship, where to purchase vessels, and even how to steal a ship in Starfield.
How to get the first ship in Starfield
The starter craft becomes available almost immediately after the adventure begins. After the character creation and a quick tutorial, players follow the storyline and pursue a map marker until a pirate attack disrupts a settlement. After the skirmish, a ship appears and Barrett, a member of Constellation, is introduced.
Barrett hands over the ship named Frontier and suggests heading to the Constellation headquarters in New Atlantis. From that moment, the first ship is ready to be piloted. The early space segments include several tutorial missions that guide players as they explore and take their ship wherever they wish.
How and where to buy new ships in Starfield
New ships can be purchased by speaking with a ship maintenance technician located at harbors in major settlements. Examples include the following cities:
- New Atlantis
- Cydonia
- Hopetown
- Neon
- Akila
Each ship for sale offers unique features tailored to different playstyles. For example, assembling a crew to rival iconic vessels requires a ship capable of accommodating at least five crew members. The Shieldbreaker fits this role. If long-range travel is the goal, a smaller ship such as Shackleton may be preferable, trading crew capacity for more jumps per light year.
Technicians rarely repeat the same ship range, so players should explore other planets until a vessel meets all needs. The price range for ships typically falls between 70,000 and 300,000 credits, so accumulating credits is necessary before upgrading. After purchase, it is advisable to designate the new ship as the main ship by revisiting the technician.
How to steal a ship in Starfield
During exploration, other ships may occasionally land nearby. If this event occurs, head to the landing zone to trigger a side objective: eliminate all enemies and steal the ship. Defeating the crew is required before the ship can be claimed as the player’s main vessel after the next landing.
Note that stealing a B or C class ship may require raising the Piloting skill to meet the necessary pilot rating. There is also a method to hijack an enemy ship in mid-space, which will be explained later in this guide.
How to upgrade ships in Starfield
Upgrading a ship involves speaking with the ship maintenance technician and selecting the option to view and customize ships. This opens the upgrade mode, where available enhancements can be installed. Some upgrades carry specific skill or level requirements, and multiple upgrades can be performed concurrently with cumulative costs for successive upgrades.
As noted, after purchasing a new ship, it should be set as the main ship in the technician dialog. The upgrade menu also allows reassigning crew members to different ships and outposts.
