In Starfield, fast travel lets players reach spots they’ve already explored within different star systems. Once some comfort with the system is built, users can roam the surface of a planet and even hop between planets and galaxies with ease.
Starfield Guides
Fast travel in Starfield is highly adaptable and follows two simple rules that players should remember:
- Teleportation is only possible to planets and systems that have already been visited. To reach a new destination, players must either fly normally or first visit the orbit of a new planet.
- If the character is overloaded, quick travel on foot isn’t available. Traveling by ship remains an option in that case.
How to fast travel with the Starmap in Starfield
The Star Map, or Starmap, helps users navigate terrain quickly. It does not require being on or near a ship. Simply open the star map by pressing the key M or selecting the corresponding item from the drawing menu. Choose one of several methods to move through the star map depending on the desired destination.
Remark: Being away from the ship is fine. Regardless of the method chosen, the ship will automatically move along with the player.
How to quickly travel to another part of the planet where you are currently located
Open the star map to view the current planet. Pick a location on the planet, even if it hasn’t been visited yet. Almost any landing site can be chosen, as long as it is suitable for the ship; parking in the middle of the ocean would not work. Then press Travel while holding X to quickly move to the selected spot.
How to quickly travel to another planet in the same galaxy
After opening the star map, press Back (Esc) or Tab to switch to planetary view and see the entire galaxy. In this mode you can select a planet you’ve already visited and set a landing spot. Confirm your choice by pressing and holding X. If you are visiting the planet for the first time, you must first plot a course for its orbit. After arriving in the planet’s orbit, you can select a landing site using the star map.
How to fast travel to a planet in another galaxy
Open the star map and double-click Back (Esc) or Tab to access the galaxy view. Choose the target star system, then a planet and a site you’ve already visited. Hold X to travel quickly between galaxies. This is technically a gravity jump, but it doesn’t require traveling the full distance—just move toward your destination. If the target system or planet hasn’t been visited, a full gravity jump is needed first.
How to navigate quickly with the scanner in Starfield
While exploring a planet’s surface or its satellites, users can move rapidly to a familiar spot shown on the scanner. Activate the scanner with F, then look for the icon of the destination and press E to jump there. The area map can also be summoned by pressing M to manually select a location with the cursor.
When traveling fast with the scanner or terrain map, the ship does not accompany the player. Returning to the ship is simple: scan for the ship’s icon or open the area map and press E to head back immediately. Note that these quick moves aren’t available if the character is overloaded.
