Taiwan’s TSMC continues to follow its program to prepare for 2nm chip production for the iPhone 17 Pro, despite two serious problems. In this respect reports DigiTimes with reference to sources.

The first problem arose due to the largest earthquake in Taiwan in the last 25 years, which caused the TSMC factory where 2nm chips were worked on to be flooded. Even if up to 10 thousand chips are damaged, insurance must cover the damage and the lost chips can be recovered.

The second problem is related to the high cost of establishing a chip production facility in the US state of Arizona. Despite receiving a $6.6 billion grant from the US government, the total investment in the three facilities will exceed $65 billion. The company is also seeking financing to establish advanced facilities in Germany and Japan.

However, experts are confident that all these difficulties will not affect Apple’s chip supply program. The pilot launch of 2nm chip production lines is planned for the second half of 2024, and small-scale production will begin in the second quarter of 2025. In this case, the iPhone 17 Pro will be the world’s first smartphone with a 2 nm chip, whose mass production is planned to be made in the third quarter of 2025.
