While you explore the world Starfield players can commit illegal acts: rob starships, steal valuables, attack local residents or even city guards. For each of them, the faction to which the ship or settlement belongs will put a bounty on your head. From this moment on, all planes will start chasing you, and passing even simple quests will become a real test. Today we’ll show you how to pay the bounty on your head and deal with all the Starfield charges.

How the Starfield penal system works
If any of the characters catch you stealing, attacking the locals, illegal hacking or piracy, their faction will put a bounty on your head. With each subsequent crime, the amount will increase. From now on, you will no longer be able to orbit planets in galaxies belonging to the faction, nor will you be able to freely visit settlements. Ships of this faction will attack the player even outside their own airspace.
The value of the bounty and the severity of the jail sentence vary by region, your reputation and factors other than the seriousness of the crime itself. In addition, some partners may complain about you to one of the factions if they are present when committing illegal actions, and they do not like it. For example, it is enough to kill one innocent character or rob several ships in open space so that Barrett can leave the squad and report it to the right place.
You can track the “rewards” on the star map by selecting a separate system and looking in the top right corner – they are marked in red.

In all, there are several ways to get rid of fines, including standard payments, bribes and prison sentences. Below we take a closer look at each of them.
Why are faction ships attacking me?
The answer to this question is quite simple: you robbed or destroyed a spaceship in space. If the bounty on your head is small, then the player will not even be chased by guards in the settlements, but as soon as you go into space, real “star wars” will begin.
In most cases, you simply do not have time to get rid of the pursuers. If there are more than a dozen ships in the orbit of the planet you went to, your ship will crash in seconds.
Even if you think you haven’t done anything, you haven’t. Most likely, you committed an offense a long time ago and have already forgotten about it. But factions remember everything.
How to pay a bounty on your head
You will find special terminals in almost every major settlement “Self-service bounty clearance kiosk” (Trackers Alliance self-service bounty clearance kiosk). Sometimes they can be found in bars, large establishments and shops. The devices are painted dark with red stripes. For example, the terminal in New Atlantis is located in a building near the spaceport.

Interact with the terminal and track the current “rewards”. All amounts available for payment are listed here.

In addition, after committing illegal actions, you can activate unique tasks. For example, if you have broken the laws of the United Colonies, it will simply not be possible to pay off the fine. When you try to do this, you see a message: “Unfortunately, local law does not allow us to offer this service in the United Colonies. Please contact the authorities of the United Colonies to resolve any legal issues.”.
The next time they try to arrest the player, both on the planet and in space, they are given a choice: go to jail and pay a fine, or work for the United States Security Service to help the organization take down the Crimson Fleet. destroy. We will tell you more about this quest in a separate guide.
Payment of the fine on the spot
Something stolen or broken in illegally in front of a witness? At the same time, the guards will approach you and demand a fine. Usually the amount of the fine is small, but the hero will confiscate all previously stolen items marked with a red marker.

Bribery
If you do not want to part with the stolen valuables, offer the guard a bribe. The amount is then multiplied tenfold. To reduce costs, just upgrade the skill branch “Negotiation” at least to the second level. So you can negotiate better and pay less. After the skill is pumped to the fourth level, the bribe option becomes free.

It is worth noting that not all guards are loyal to the player – for this you will also have to upgrade the skill “Charisma”. If the guard refuses to take a bribe, he will confiscate all stolen items and increase the initial amount of the fine several times. If the amount of the reward for your head exceeds 10,000 credits, there is simply no way to pay off.
Serving a prison sentence
Have you been caught but can’t pay a fine or a bribe? You will have to stay in solitary confinement for a while, lose everything stolen and even lose part of the experience. Fortunately, in the game, each prison sentence ends in a few seconds.
But you also have the right to try to escape while in custody. In this case, you will have to return all your things stored in the prison box (expert level), and the reward for your head will not disappear – it will only increase.
