Perhaps spell slots are one of the most complex and incomprehensible things out there Baldur’s Gate 3, which causes the most misunderstanding among the players. Fortunately or unfortunately, this will have to come to an agreement, since cells are the main mechanics of any spellcaster (sorcerer, wizard, priest, etc.), and without them it will be very difficult. Therefore, in this guide we will analyze what kind of cells they are, where they come from and how to deal with them.

Are cells an indicator of mana?

It should be understood that the cells have absolutely nothing to do with the usual mana in other games, if only because they are very rarely restored with the help of potions, and some time after the end of the battle, they remain, as before, at zero.

In the D&D 5e system, on which Baldur’s Gate 3 is based almost entirely, cells can only be fully regenerated after a long period of rest. The exception is the wizard, who restores all of his slots with only a short rest, as well as most casters’ class abilities, such as wizards’ Spellcrafting Points.

What is the level of spell slots?

The level of cells is, in simple words, the damage of your spell. How dangerous it will be. For example, Fireball, a 3rd level spell, casts with 3 slots and deals 8d6 damage. But if you cast the same spell with the 4th cell, then the damage will increase to 9d6, the 6th – you will get 11d6.

Accordingly, the higher the cell, the higher the damage – and vice versa. Keep in mind that this doesn’t apply to all spells: It doesn’t matter which cell you use “Misty Step” in – neither the distance nor the effect of this will change in any way.

How to understand how many cells each class has?

It is worth studying the classic rules of D&D 5e – each class has a table with a change in the number of cells due to the increase in the level of the hero. In Baldur’s Gate 3, everything is the same.

Why don’t all spells consume slots?

There are some spells that do not spend slots – for example, they contain tricks (conspiracies). These are level 0 spells and therefore use nothing in combat other than an action point. But keep in mind that they are much weaker than the spells cast using cells.

Other spells that don’t consume slots include scrolls and abilities gained from items – these are often referred to as ritual spells.

Why does the same villain also have spell slots? It’s not a caster!

Many classes have magical subclasses (archetypes) that allow them to combine basic abilities with spells. In this case, of course, there are not as many cells as in the same wizard, but they are still there.

These subclasses include: Arcane Trickster (evader), “Mystical Knight” (warrior).

Where can I get potions that restore cells?

There are two options: find it randomly in the world or cook it. There are different types of drinks:

  1. The usual “elixir of magical development” (cell 1st level).
  2. “Great Elixir of Magical Development” (2nd level slot).
  3. “Excellent elixir of magical development” (3rd level slot).
