Mediterranean Flamenco Festival lights up Alicante and Murcia with star-studded performances
By November 25, audiences will have witnessed a trio of standout flamenco moments. Cante maestro María Terremoto and cantaor Mayte Martín, along with bailaores Eduardo Guerrero and Patricia Guerrero, and comedian Juan Luis Cano, are set to perform at Fundación Mediterráneo Alicante, venue of the festival. The schedule invites fans to experience a blend of passion and precision on stage at Avda. Doctor Gadea, 1.
The festival opens with a photography lecture on flamenco, led by the director of the Mediterranean Flamenco Festival. Xavier Serrano will host the session, followed by the awarding of the Flemish Photography Award for best snapshots. The opening day will also showcase an exhibition featuring the top 20 works from the competition, inviting visitors to explore how imagery captures flamenco’s energy and emotion.
María Terremoto, winner of the Giraldillo Revelation prize at the Seville Biennale in 2016 and already a recognized figure at age 22, will present her show Flemish on Friday, October 14. Terremoto hails from Jerez, the daughter of Fernando Terremoto and the granddaughter of Terremoto de Jerez, continuing a family lineage deeply rooted in flamenco.
This young artist, still in her twenties, has stirred the flamenco scene by mastering styles such as soleá, bulería, fandango, and cantiñas. She embodies a contemporary spirit, keeping one eye on tradition while embracing the present moment.
On October 22, the spotlight shifts to Cádiz-born bailaor Eduardo Guerrero. He will present Lighthouse, a show crafted for a distinctive tour that visits several lighthouses across Spain. The performance emphasizes a fluid stream of flamenco styles and reinterpretations of classic songs. The minimalist stage design draws all attention to the vivid costumes and elegant choreography, making the movement the focal point of the experience.
Eduardo Guerrero recently received the Lorca Flamenco Award 2022, a testament to his avant-garde approach and his global stage presence. His contributions mark a high point in a career defined by innovative dance and international reach.
Mayte Martín, Arcángel and Eduardo Guerrero meet at the Mediterranean Flamenco Festival
The festival continues on Saturday, November 5, with a lecture and show featuring Juan Luis Cano. The program resumes on November 12 with Mayte Martín presenting her show Déjà vu, a performance that blends seasoned artistry with a fresh sensibility. National Dance Award winner Patricia Guerrero will close the festival on Friday, November 25, bringing the season to a powerful finale.
On the 13th, admission to all events will be free with advance invitation booking, inviting broader audiences to experience flamenco in a welcoming, inclusive setting.
Festival Flamenco Mediterráneo VI runs from October 14 to November 26, 2022, with performances hosted at Fundación Mediterráneo in Alicante (Avda. Doctor Gadea, 1) and in Murcia (C/Escultor Nicolás Salzillo, 7). Tickets can be purchased at the box office or through local ticket outlets. A subscription option is available for 100 euros, granting access to six shows, a window into the documentary cycle, and entry to additional festival activities.
The Mediterranean Flamenco Festival aims to bring flamenco culture closer to the cities of Alicante and Murcia and to establish the Foundation as a cultural reference. It seeks to highlight flamenco as part of intangible heritage that enriches communities and connects people through live performance.
Citizens and visitors alike are invited to explore the festival’s approach to flamenco as a living art form, where tradition meets modern interpretation and shared experience becomes the heart of the celebration. [Source: Mediterranean Flamenco Festival attribution]
