Mediterranean Foundation operates campuses in Alicante and Murcia, serving as venues for the International Festival of Cante de las Minas 62nd edition selections. An agreement between the foundation and the Cante de las Minas Foundation solidifies a partnership that designates these two cities as platforms where artists can pursue the festival’s highest honors and earn a place in its prestigious competition. The semi finals and final round are scheduled to take place in La Unión from August 9 to 12.
The arrangement includes a second performance opportunity: the 2023 Festival winners will headline a gala featuring the Mediterranean Flamenco Festival winners, staged at the same Alicante and Murcia venues. This format has already been implemented under the current agreement, following a successful preview last year.
Speaking on the collaboration, a representative from the Mediterranean Foundation highlighted the value of integrating cultural education with the program. The nominee pool will have the chance to perform for top prizes in two culturally significant cities, Murcia and Alicante. This sentiment was conveyed after the agreement was finalized.
Louis Boyer, president of the Fundación Mediterráneo, underscored the pride in partnering with the Cante de las Minas festival, one of Spain’s most celebrated cultural events recognized both nationally and internationally. He noted that the collaboration aims to connect the foundation’s work with flamenco talent, viewing it as an expression of intangible cultural heritage and a path to broaden the reach of flamenco artistry worldwide.
The competition testing date is set for June 9 at the headquarters of the Fundación Mediterráneo in Alicante, with the corresponding Murcia class on June 16. Additional venues have been added across several cities including Rojales, Vendrell, Valladolid, El Bierzo, Denia, Madrid, Lorca, Torrevieja, Álora, Sagunto, Yecla, and Viator, expanding the reach of the auditions and preliminary rounds.
