ADDA Presents a Summer of Classics: Remember
Several music legends from the late 20th century remain active on today’s scene, and this summer they unite under ADDA’s Remember cycle. The program runs from August 8 to August 20, 2022, showcasing a celebration of enduring songs and iconic performances.
During this season, the Provincial Committee completes the tributes planned for the 200th anniversary of the institution. UB40 featuring Ali Campbell joins forces with Kool and the Gang and Tony Hadley, the unmistakable voice of Spandau Ballet, in a collaborative set that blends their distinctive styles with a chorus of young singers previewing new musical arrangements by ADDA’s choir.
UB40 featuring Ali Campbell opens the cycle on August 8. Campbell, a founding member and former lead singer of UB40, left the group in 2008 and rejoined with Astro in 2013 to form a new lineup that produced three fresh albums after a long legal dispute, reaching high on the UK charts.
Stone-cold Reggae and pop influences from Bob Marley, Green, and Jimmy Cliff underlie Kool & The Gang, a Birmingham-based powerhouse blending pop, reggae, and dub. They found worldwide success with hits from the 1980s and beyond, including songs covered by artists across the globe. Their range extends from the classic to the contemporary, with collaborations and reissues that have kept their name in the spotlight. Across decades, the group has sold more than 30 million records and continues to perform and tour, bringing high energy to every stage. Their concerts often pair vintage grooves with modern connections to fans around the world.
The funk and spirit of the seventies and eighties arrive with Kool & The Gang on August 10. Their catalog, spanning numerous genres, has resonated with audiences for generations. Tracks like Celebration, Jungle Boogie, and Fresh have become staples in film soundtracks and radio play. The band’s influence remains evident as they continue to bring energy to live performances, earning multiple awards and recognitions across decades. Their enduring appeal is reflected in continued tours and a catalog that remains popular on streaming platforms and in live venues.
There is no shortage of classic material for fans, as Kool & The Gang blend their signature style with new interpretations, keeping the essence of their early sound while inviting new listeners to experience their timeless music.
The distinctive voice of Tony Hadley, formerly a central member of Spandau Ballet, is featured on August 12. Hadley launched a solo career with Game Status and later released a string of albums in the 1990s. His live performances have showcased a seamless transition from studio hits to energetic stage shows, with his storytelling and vocal presence remaining a highlight for audiences. A retrospective yet fresh concert experience awaits as he revisits beloved songs alongside new interpretations that reflect his ongoing artistry.
Another highlight closes the cycle with the Choir Boys presenting two performances (August 19 and 20). More than eighty vocalists from across Spain come together to recount the life of a musician who inspired a famous film, drawing on experiences from a boarding school. The ensemble was formed through an open audition led by the Kakgroup, which launched the Boys of the Choir Music School, bringing a community-driven approach to this tribute. The show will have a preview in Alicante before its Madrid premiere.
Julia Parra, Vice President for Culture, notes that the ADDA Foundation wanted music to play a prominent role in the 200th anniversary celebration. She emphasizes the Foundation’s commitment to broad dissemination and to offering world-class cultural experiences for residents and visitors in Alicante and beyond.
Ticket prices range from 20 to 40 euros, reflecting ADDA’s aim to make historic performances accessible while celebrating enduring musical legacies.
