The Ulyanovsk Auto Plant aims to noticeably boost car production this year while advancing localization and technological independence. This plan was outlined by the company’s general director, Alexei Spirin, during a meeting with the governor of the Ulyanovsk region, Alexei Russkikh, underscoring a clear trajectory toward localized manufacturing and self-reliant technology supply chains in the coming months.
Remaining stationary would mean ceding market ground to other automakers. The leadership at UAZ committed to expanding output across all vehicle lines, reflecting a strategic shift after last year’s results. The plant produced just over 35,000 cars in the previous year, a figure that represented a 15 percent decline from 2021. The purpose of the current push is to reverse that trend, improve efficiency across production cycles, and strengthen the company’s position in the competitive segment of the market.
This content is presented in the context of ongoing localization efforts that are designed to secure autonomy in key technologies and supply chains. Spirin emphasized that the company is moving forward with these localization initiatives to reduce dependence on external suppliers and to foster domestic innovation ecosystems that can support longer production cycles and more resilient operations in the face of global volatility.
In the medium term, the leadership pointed to the planned reintroduction of essential safety and control systems. Specifically, the hydraulic ABS control unit and the rate stability system are part of a broader program to restore advanced safety features, along with airbags. The target timeline cited by Spirin spans the end of 2023 into early 2024, aligning with wider regional and national goals for ramped-up local manufacturing capabilities and improved vehicle safety standards.
