Google Chrome developers have added a feature to the beta version of the browser that allows users to turn any web page into PWA applications. It’s a novelty it was noticed By user Leopeva64, who discovered the “Set Page as Application” option in the “Save and Share” menu.
The innovation is currently available to Chrome Canary 124 users. To enable this feature, you need to enable “chrome://flags/#web-app-universal-install” and “chrome://flags/#shortcuts”. -not-apps” flags.
The move is part of Google’s strategy to phase out support for traditional Chrome apps, moving towards Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) that provide deeper integration with the operating system and offer a user experience comparable to native apps. Some popular platforms such as YouTube and Reddit already offer the installation of their PWAs.
The current stable build of Google Chrome is currently version 122. The next version, Chrome 123, will include a new PDF reader for Android, an Android-style media player for desktop operating systems, and the ability to share tab groups.
