Apple plans to disable the blood oxygen level (pulse oximeter) function in its Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 smartwatches to avoid being banned from selling the devices in the United States due to a lost patent dispute. In this respect reports Bloomberg publication.
This Apple plan is described in documents from Masimo Corp., where the IT giant is discussing pulse oximetry. According to Masimo, US Customs and Border Protection has approved disabling the blood oxygen level feature of the Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 in order to continue selling them in the country.
Apple’s Masimo Corp. decision to infringe patents. It was adopted by the US International Trade Commission (ITC) last October. It came into force in January 2024, but Apple temporarily removed the watch models in question from sale in December. The company soon decided to challenge the decision in court, which temporarily allowed it to continue selling the Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2.
Bloomberg believes that in this case, Apple will not turn off the blood oxygen sensor until all trials are completed. Most likely, the IT giant from Cupertino is considering this opportunity as a last resort.
Previously Apple for the first time passed Samsung for smartphone supply.
