The video showing the process of the SARS-CoV-2 virus destroying human cells received an award in the Nikon Small World in Motion 2023 competition. reports New Scientist publication.
The Nikon Small World Motion competition has been held since 2011. It is organized by Nikon Instruments, a division of Nikon Corporation that manufactures microscopes. The competition includes videos shot using microscopes to show the beauty and complexity of life in the microcosm.
The 2023 winners included videos showing the development of neurons in a chicken embryo (first place), the movement of blood in the caudal fin of a fish (second place), and the destruction of human cells during SARS-CoV-2 infection. In third place is the virus that causes the disease (COVID-19). The top 5 also included a video of the beating heart of a five-day-old zebrafish and images of aquatic inhabitants from the protozoan group.
The Nikon Small World Jury consists of four to five microphotographers selected by Nikon each year. The winners’ works are exhibited at exhibitions and also published in popular science media.
