In 2023, Russian smartphone users began to update their devices more frequently. This is stated in a study by MTS, the results of which are available on socialbites.ca.
The frequency of smartphone updates in Russia has been increasing over the past two years. For example, while it was 2 years and 1 month in the first nine months of 2021, it became 1 year and 10 months in 2022. In the first nine months of 2023, the gadget update frequency has already dropped to 1 year and 5 months.
According to MTS Big Data analysis of smartphones registered in the operator network, the trend is associated with the expansion of the range of gadgets on the market in the low and middle price segments, including Chinese brands showing the highest growth. number of smartphones. Thus, their share in the mobile network increased by almost 10% in 2023.
The biggest increase in the number of users from January to September was recorded by the Realme brand; Its share increased by 2.5% compared to the same period in 2022. Tecno and Apple brands, whose shares increased by 2% and 1.5% respectively, were also included in the top 3. South Korean brand Samsung showed the highest user churn at almost 3%.
The high demand for smartphones from Chinese manufacturers is also confirmed by their sales: the total share of Chinese smartphones in terms of units accounts for 80% of all smartphone sales on the Russian market for the nine months of 2023.
At the same time, the emergence of new Chinese brands on the Russian market has eroded user loyalty to the products of some companies. So, in 2023, Russians began to pay attention to smartphones from other manufacturers more often when switching to new devices. Only 30% of users kept their commitments, compared to 34% last year.
While iPhone owners remain the most loyal (67%), others choose other brands when choosing a new device. For example, Xiaomi had a brand loyalty rate of 41% and Samsung had a brand loyalty rate of 35%.
