Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has decided to expand its China Hero Project program to support game developers in China. About informs Reuters agency. The Japanese IT giant plans to invest one million yuan (about $140,000) in each project selected by the jury.
By strengthening its support program, Sony wants to increase the popularity of console games in China, as well as find new talent and bring its products to the international market. Reuters believes that another important aim of Sony is to increase its share in the Chinese market. For Sony, this is a pivotal moment in the race with Microsoft, which has also made attempts to expand into Asia as well as acquire major publishers.
The China Hero Project was launched in 2017. The project was suspended in 2020 due to the COVID-19 outbreak. During the 2017 and 2019 phases, Sony’s “incubator” supported the development of 17 games, of which seven were eventually released.
“The scope of the third season will be much wider than the previous two seasons,” said Bao Bo, Sony’s director of development in China.
As part of the presentation of the third phase of the China Hero Project, it was also announced that Sony will act as the publisher of the two previously selected games. We are talking about Lost Soul Aside and Convallaria projects.
According to SIE director Jim Ryan, 3.5 million PlayStation 4 consoles have been sold so far in China. In the case of PlayStation 5, the Japanese company plans to double the result of the previous generation.
