For five consecutive years, the Leo has been on the hunt for standout names to reclaim its competitive edge and honor its storied past.
In the 2023 season, Universidad de Chile faced a must-win scenario. Even as Azul Azul acknowledged that slipping into relegation battlegrounds was unsustainable for four straight years, the club knew another disappointing run could erase the tradition of glory that spans 18 league titles, 5 cups, 1 super cup, and 1 South American title. Zafar emerged as a symbol of renewal, aiming to restore the mystique that has defined the club through years of achievement. The project from 2022 did not secure Junior Fernandes, who did not extend his contract.
The first new signing was Juan Pablo Gómez, 31, arriving from Curicó to inject more power and speed to the right wing of the defense.

The second addition was Leandro Fernández, released from Independiente de Avellaneda after two years. Federico Mateos signed a three-year contract, and Matías Zaldivia joined after seven seasons with Colo Colo.

The club announced the signing of Fernández and Mateos with enthusiasm, highlighting a renewed squad in the lead-up to the season. The club also marked the arrival of Zaldivia, adding veteran leadership to the defense. These moves signaled a push to reclaim a place at the top of the Chilean league and compete across domestic and regional competitions.
