In Motril, within two and a half days of a hunger strike, the division around the Divina Pastora neighborhood intensified as Ángeles Béjar, the mother of Luis Rubiales, was moved to the Emergency Department of a Granada hospital on Wednesday afternoon.
The incident was conveyed to media teams stationed at the temple gates by the parish priest, who cited intense pressure used by Béjar during a controversial push to persuade Jennifer Hermoso to alter her account and speak the “truth” about her involuntary kiss with Rubiales, the former president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, during the World Cup celebrations in Sydney on August 20.
After nearly three days of only water and isotonic drinks, combined with rest in a sacred room, Béjar, who is over seventy and has chronic kidney disease, began to show signs of deterioration. Anxiety, physical discomfort, and swelling in her legs escalated, prompting her to suspend the hunger strike around 6 p.m. on Wednesday and be transported to Santa Ana de Motril hospital for care.
The emergency admission, lasting several hours and carried out in the company of her son, who was expected to emerge from his own discreet retreat soon after, sparked speculation that he might still have been at home. Observers noted the son’s possible relocation to a two-million-euro loft in central Madrid while remaining close to his mother during this sensitive period, a detail that drew attention to the family’s private arrangements as they faced the public spotlight.
At Santa Ana de Motril hospital, Béjar underwent a battery of medical tests. After three days of improving responses to treatment and remaining under intense monitoring while not eating, she left the medical center around 23:30. She returned home accompanied by Rubiales, who has since avoided appearing on camera amid the media storm and ongoing discussions about resigning after his 90-day FIFA suspension.
