Beyond Orbelín, a number of Mexican footballers have secured league titles in Greece.

After the Greek competition title in the 2022-2023 season with AEK Athens was earned, the Mexican joined a select group of tri-color champions in the country; the others are Nery Castillo and Alan Pulido.

Season 2022-23: After a stint with Celta de Vigo, Orbelín found a new chapter on loan with Matías Almeyda’s squad at AEK Athens. Together with the coach known as Pelado, Maguito captured his first national title in Europe.

ALAN PULIDO

Season 2015-16: Alan Pulido departed from Tigres amid intense controversy, as the club resisted letting the Mexican striker go. The Court of Arbitration for Sport intervened to enable PuliGol to sign with Levadiakos.

Although his role was limited, Pulido was recognized as champion after moving to Olympiacos because of the contractual dispute with Tigres. The Greek club clinched the title several rounds before the season concluded.

NERY CASTILLO

Seasons 2001-02 through 2007-08: Nery Castillo stands out as the Mexican footballer who left the strongest imprint in Greece. Hailing from producing state of San Luis Potosí, he not only collected trophies but also scored frequently for Greek clubs.

With Olympiacos, Castillo amassed seven league titles and two cup titles across seven seasons. In total, he appeared in 154 matches and found the back of the net 43 times.

In summarizing his impact, Castillo helped raise the bar for Mexican players abroad and demonstrated the potential for international success in the Greek championship.

Overall, these careers reflect a notable pattern of Mexican players achieving domestic silverware in Greece while contributing to their clubs’ competitive legacies.
