Match Suspended: Querétaro versus América Delayed Over Pitch Safety
Officials confirmed that the Matchday 2 clash between Queretaro and América will not proceed as scheduled. The Apertura 2023 fixture is postponed due to concerns over the playing surface at Estadio La Corregidora after recent events.
The anticipated debut of Julian Quinones for América will have to wait. League authorities announced that the Matchday 2 encounter against Querétaro is postponed while conditions on the pitch are assessed, following concerns tied to the stadium after a recent concert and heavy rain.
WHY WAS THE MATCH POSTPONED?
The game will be rescheduled to a date that will be announced in the coming hours. Club Gallos is also likely to face disciplinary measures, as the rain and subsequent cleanup delayed recovery of the field after a concert held at La Corregidora. The authorities indicated that the postponement is to protect player safety and ensure fair enforcement of officiating standards.
After several inspections of the La Corregidora pitch by Liga MX and the stadium assessment team, officials determined that the surface did not meet the required technical standards for competitive play. The latest expert reports point to damage stemming from an event dismantling process, which did not align with established safety protocols for the arena on the Sunday prior. As a result, Liga MX informed the clubs and the Mexican Football Federation that the match would be rescheduled with a new date and time to safeguard the integrity of players and referees. The disciplinary committee of the federation will review the case as part of the standard procedures, according to Liga MX statements reported by Goal.
