Former Lokomotiv goalkeeper Marinato Guilherme revealed that he waited for the club’s leadership to present him with renewal options instead of seeking a move elsewhere. He spoke to Match TV about the situation.
Guilherme explained that he did not actively search for another club. He chose to wait until the final moments to see what Lokomotiv would propose. His main grievance wasn’t the contract expiration itself but the lack of clear communication. He believes the club should have approached him sooner with a candid plan.
The shot-stopper noted that he was informed, just one week before the season concluded, that his contract would not be renewed. This timing left him with limited preparation for the next chapter of his career.
Guilherme joined Lokomotiv in 2007 and spent a long era with the red-green squad. During his tenure, the club claimed the Russian championship, lifted the Russian Cup four times, and also won the Russian Super Cup multiple occasions, highlighting a period of sustained domestic success.
On the international stage, Guilherme has represented Russia since 2016. He has earned 19 caps for the national team, during which he conceded 17 goals. A highlight of his national team tenure came in 2018 when Russia reached the World Cup quarter-finals, a notable achievement for the squad and for him personally as a goalkeeper.
Earlier Lokomotiv had announced Guilherme’s departure, marking the end of a lengthy chapter in the club’s history.
