In GOAL, the focus is on how Mexican clubs perform in the Concacaf Champions League.

The Concacaf Champions League of 2023 begins with the Round of 16, where 16 teams from Central America, North America, and the Caribbean compete to advance to the quarterfinals and ultimately reach the top eight in the region.

Seattle Sounders enter as the defending champions after defeating UNAM in a global aggregate score of 5-2. With this backdrop, Mexican squads such as Atlas, León, Pachuca, and Tigres aim to reclaim the dominance they have held in the region for many years and secure the crown once again in this edition.

Thus, GOAL explains how Aztec teams qualify for the Concacaf tournament and what it means for their season.

HOW DO MEXICAN TEAMS QUALIFY FOR THE CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE?

The qualification path to the Concacaf Champions League is earned entirely on sporting merit. The confederation allocates four spots to the Mexican Football Federation each year, distributed as follows:

Mexico 1: champion of the Apertura tournament

Mexico 2: finalist of the Apertura tournament

Mexico 3: champion of the Clausura tournament

Mexico 4: finalist of the Clausura tournament

*If a finalist or champion team is repeated, the spot goes to the team with the best points total in the football year. If the tie persists, the second-best scoring team across the two regular tournaments secures the slot.
