THE GIVEAWAY GUIDELINES

CONMEBOL outlined, via a detailed newsletter, how the draw will determine the four groups, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the quarterfinals.

SEEDING TEAMS

The four group leaders are Argentina, the reigning CONMEBOL Copa América champion; Mexico, CONCACAF Gold Cup winner, qualified through Nations League 2023; the United States, the CONCACAF team highest in FIFA rankings through the Nations League; and Brazil, the top-ranked CONMEBOL team by FIFA rankings that is not the current Copa América champion.

POTS

The draw features four pots. The first pot houses the seeds. The remaining teams are distributed according to December FIFA rankings, while the two CONCACAF teams entering via the Play-In are placed into the fourth pot.

  • POT 1: Argentina (A1), Mexico (A2), United States (A3), Brazil (A4)
  • POT 2: Uruguay (11th), Colombia (15th), Ecuador (32nd), Peru (35th)
  • POT 3: Chile (40th), Panama (41st), Venezuela (49th), Paraguay (53rd)
  • POT 4: Jamaica (55th), Bolivia (85th), CONCACAF 5 (Canada or Trinidad and Tobago), CONCACAF 6 (Honduras or Costa Rica)

EXCEPTIONS

One clarification from the draw is that no group can have more than three CONMEBOL teams or more than two CONCACAF teams. If a drawn group violates this rule, it is moved to the next group. In practice, there will be two groups with three CONMEBOL teams and one CONCACAF team, and two groups with two CONMEBOL teams and two CONCACAF teams.
