After committing to the Professional League Tournament and supporting several youth players, the DT cycle is extended for another year.

Boca faced a brief crisis at the start of July 2022. The departure of Sebastián Battaglia was announced abruptly, and in the same fashion his replacement was revealed: during a press conference that was called unexpectedly, President Jorge Amor Ameal announced that Hugo Benjamín Ibarra would keep charge of the first team after taking over on an interim basis once the former coach who won the most titles in the club’s history was removed.

Despite a rough opening, El Negro steadied the ship with tight results and the contribution of many of Boca Predio’s youngsters. He eventually clinched the Professional League Tournament and entered the year with potential to add two more trophies, the Argentina Cup and the Champions Trophy, to the cabinet.

UNTIL HUGO IBARRA HAS A CONTRACT

On the night of Wednesday, December 28, Hugo Ibarra signed a document binding him to the club through December 2023. In short, leadership chose to extend the contract for another year.

Ibarra initially held a contract that ran until December 31, 2022. As Ameal noted in the coach’s formal statement on July 12, 2022, his position was not described as interim; instead, the coaching staff’s future would be reviewed at year’s end to decide on an extension.

After the local championship title, the plan appeared to be moving forward, until Juan Román Riquelme commented: “Ibarra has a chance to continue. We are very satisfied with him and his coaching staff; we hope to keep him for a long time,” remarks made before the Argentina Cup upset to Patronato.

WHO MAKES UP THE IBARRA TECHNICAL STAFF

Initially, the assistants were Leandro Gracián and Mariano Herrón. The trio stood on the substitute bench during the loss to San Lorenzo. However, at the official presentation a few days later, Herrón was no longer present and Roberto Pompei took his place. The third member of the coaching team, Tito, had already endured two interim spells at the club, both in 2010: in mid-April he stepped in for Abel Alves and oversaw six games (three wins and three draws), and in November he returned after Claudio Borghi’s departure to guide five more matches, with two wins, two draws and one loss; meanwhile Herrón led the reserves, who eventually won.
