Alicante will host a grand final that gathers the Iberdrola Women’s Sailing League’s top teams and showcases a robust program of sports and social activities in the waters off Alicante from October 20 to 22. The event was presented by the Alicante Royal Regatta Club and the Alicante City & Beach Tourist Board, highlighting the lineup of competitions and cultural happenings that will shape the championship weekend. Among those in attendance were Mari Carmen Sánchez, Deputy Mayor and Tourism Councillor, María Conejero, Equality Councillor, and Regatta Club sailor Sofia Clar. The city is set to become Spain’s sailing capital for five days as the federation, Iberdrola, the city council, and the Regatta Club align to deliver an intensive mix of sport and social programming for the occasion.

The deputy mayor noted that Alicante earned the right to host the grand final over nominations from several major clubs across the country. She said it is exciting to bring together Spain’s leading sailors and to give a boost to the city’s profile. Alicante, she added, has everything necessary to stage this test: climate comfort, excellent infrastructure, proven experience in major races such as The Ocean Race and Tabarca a Vela, and a strong commitment from the Real Club de Regatas de Alicante to advancing women’s equality in sailing and sport. By continuing support for the Board of Trustees, the city is well positioned to host Spain’s best sailors for the championship weekend.

The sponsorship from Alicante City & Beach Tourist Board also extends to two Alicante-based women’s sailing teams that will compete nationally under the RCRA banner. The young squad from Dorsia Covirán and the Regatta Club team features promising talents led by captain Berta Campos. In the previous national circuit, the team earned second place, underscoring the strength of Alicante’s pipeline of sailors.

Sofía Clar, the RCRA sailing spokesperson, expressed gratitude for the backing from the Alicante City & Beach brand. She noted that the sponsorship elevates competitive women’s sailing from Alicante and enables participation in high-profile national events such as Palma Vela, the Copa del Rey, the Príncipe de Asturias regatta, and Tabarca Vela. This support positions the club as a rising force within the national sailing scene.

Competition

The final matches are scheduled for October 20 to 22. In the lead-up, organizers and sponsors will host a series of events, including a symposium focused on women and sport. Alicante aspires to become a benchmark for women’s sailing, highlighted by projects such as Nuria Sánchez’s 2022 national award for the best sports initiative advocating equality and the Dorsia Covirán team, the 2022 Iberdrola League champions. The Regatta Club will open its doors to residents and visitors, inviting everyone to experience the days up close.

The Alicante City & Beach “Young Promises” team comprises Berta Campos, Lara Himmes, Paola Lombardía, Berta Ramón-Borja, and María Moreno. The city’s “Dorsia Covirán” squad includes Nuria Sánchez, Natalia Vía-Dufresne, Marta Peñarrubia, María Torcida, and Gisela Pulido.

Notes: The event is organized with support from the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation, Iberdrola, and the Regatta Club, all aiming to elevate competitive women’s sailing while highlighting Alicante’s hospitality and maritime heritage. This collaboration aligns with broader efforts to advance gender equality in sport and to showcase Spain’s sailing culture to national audiences and visitors from across Canada and the United States as well as within Europe. The program will feature a mix of races, demonstrations, and social activities designed to welcome participants and spectators alike, with a focus on safety, accessibility, and inclusion across all stages of the competition.
