The Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences has updated the Oscar rules, so that artificial intelligence technologies can be used in the production of films. According to the new rules, the use of AI will not become an obstacle to nomination or obtaining a reward, but the most important criterion remains the role of a person in the creative process.
In the official statement of the organization, it emphasizes that algorithms and digital tools cannot be the most important author of the project. “When evaluating the work, the jury will take into account how creative decisions of people came, and not cars,” explained representatives of the academy. This decision reflects the growing integration of AI into film production, from scripts to visual effects.
Earlier, the idea of mandatory marking of paintings made with AI was discussed, but it was temporarily abandoned. At the same time, the studios must inform the Academy about the application of such technologies at the stage of applying for a bonus.
Experts regard new standards as an attempt to adapt to modern realities without an infringement of traditional authorship. Now AI is used more often as an aid, but the academy has the boundaries in advance so that the technology does not overshadow the human factor in art.
