Russian swimmer received neutral status 09:53

The International Aquatics Federation (World Aquatics) granted neutral individual athlete status to Russian swimmer Stepan Goncharov. The official website reports that Independent organization to combat negative events in water sports (Aquatics Integrity Unit).

The 21-year-old Goncharov was previously the winner of the All-Russian Russian Reserve competition in 2021.

In March 2022, the International Swimming Federation (FINA) banned Russian and Belarusian swimmers from competing under its auspices, even under a neutral flag. On September 4, 2023, FINA announced that athletes from Russia and Belarus will be able to participate in swimming competitions with neutral status.

Only one Russian competed in swimming at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris – Evgeny Somov. Russian athletes were only allowed to compete in singles; group performances were banned.
