Russian tennis player Karen Khachanov lost to Britain’s Daniel Evans in the first round of the US Open in New York.
The match, which lasted 5 hours and 35 minutes, ended with the score 6:7 (6:8), 7:6 (7:2), 7:6 (7:4), 4:6, 6:4 in favor of Evans, who did not have a ranking number for the tournament. Khachanov was ranked 23rd. Evans will face Argentine Mariano Navone in the next round.
The meeting set a new record for the longest men’s singles match at the US Open, surpassing the previous record set by Sweden’s Stefan Edberg in 5 hours and 26 minutes over American Michael Chang in the 1992 semi-finals.
Karen Khachanov is 28 years old, ranked 22nd in the world and has six ATP titles. His best results at a Grand Slam tournament are the semifinals of the Australian Open (2023) and the US Open (2022). In 2021, he won the silver medal in singles at the Olympic Games and won the Davis Cup with the Russian team.
Daniel Evans is 34 years old, ranked 184th in the ATP rankings and has two victories in tournaments sponsored by the organization. He has not advanced beyond the fourth round at Grand Slam tournaments.
Also on Tuesday, Russian Roman Safiullin advanced to the second round by defeating American Matthew Forbes (6:4, 7:6 (7:2), 6:2). In his next match, he will face Italian Matteo Arnaldi.
The US Open will be the fourth and final hard-court Grand Slam tournament of the season and will conclude on September 8. The total prize fund is $75 million. The current men’s singles champion is Novak Djokovic of Serbia.
